We are a very friendly club and hold social events several times a year. Because these are members-only events, we don’t announce them on our website or on our social media handles. Once you become a member, you’ll receive announcements regarding these events via email, relevant Google Groups pages, and they will also be listed on the Member's Portal home page, well in advance of the scheduled date.
New and prospective members always ask, “Do I need to buy a telescope?” The answer, of course, is “No”. About half of our members own a scope. But if you want to learn about what’s up there in the sky, there’s no better way than to look through the eyepiece of a scope, either yours or someone else’s.
Bring your telescope, or come without one, to one of our public observing sessions located all around the city. The locations are all listed on our Observing page. There’s also a list of the next upcoming event for each location on our Google Calendar.
The seasoned observers at these sites are always eager to answer questions and to let you look through their scope. And if you’re ready to buy your own scope, they can give you purchasing advice.
Special Interest Groups
We use Google Groups as a means for members to communicate in a group setting. There is one general purpose group and three special interest groups. Join any or all of the fascinating groups below!
Eyepiece, AAA’s web-based newsletter, provides readers with a varied diet of club news, lectures and other events in and around New York City. Articles offer tips on observing, astrophotography, and equipment, in addition to reports on discoveries and other relevant news about astronomy and astrophysics. Email messages alert members when new content is available.
